The beaches of Hilton Head, SC Island have been named as one of the top ten beaches in the country. And for very good reason! These beautiful natural beaches provide the perfect location for numerous water activities, sunning on the pure white sand, walking, jogging, fishing and splashing in the cool clear water.
Hilton Head is not a large island, as it measures only 12 miles long by 5 miles wide. In spite of its quaint size, it is packed full of fun and interesting activities. The all time favorite spot to whittle away the hours is right on its celebrated beaches.
Most areas of Hilton Head beach provide a gentle slope into the water allowing quite a bit of space to walk out before getting in too deep. Be sure to watch for tidal holes though, as they can be quite deep and sudden. On the other hand, you won’t see much surfing at Hilton Head. Those nice gradual slopes keep the wave action away from the shore. Bike riding on the beach is very popular. The sand below the mid tide line is packed hard enough to provide traction for bikes with wide beach tires, which are available for rent throughout the island.
Many areas of the island beaches are open for public access and most are watched by life guards from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Alder Lane is a relatively uncrowded beach in the southern part of the island. If you’re staying in that area, it’s an easy bike ride from your room. Folly Field Beach is fairly small with restrooms, water fountains, and sand showers. Be careful at this one due to its tendency to have more riptides and undertows.
The busiest beach on the island is Coligny Beach due to its great amenities. This coastline area provides volleyball nets, an outdoor bar, water fountains, sand showers, changing rooms and rest rooms. Beach equipment, Hobie Cats, umbrellas, sand trikes and recumbent bikes are available for rent. Various shopping and restaurants are located adjacent to the beach. Just a short walk either way from the busiest part of the beach will provide a spot with a bit more privacy. Dreissen Beach Park, or Singleton Beach, is also popular with a playground, rest rooms, sand showers, vending machines, picnic tables and a grill.
Alder Lane, Coligny Beach, Dreissen Beach Park, Folly Field Beach and Islander’s Beach Club are all equipped with sturdy beach mats making them wheelchair accessible.
Fish Haul Park provides a beach on Port Royal Sound that offers an earthy setting for nature lovers. The huge oak trees with Spanish moss help to create lovely surroundings. The park has a small pavilion, picnic tables, restrooms and a pier reaching out to the tidal marsh. This is also a favorite place for clamming.
There are a few other beaches that should be mentioned. South Beach is uncrowded and attracts dolphins and other wildlife. There is no parking here so you must walk or bike ride to get here. Guests of Sea Pines Plantation have access to Tower Beach and Sea Pines Beach Club. Crown Plaza Resort, Palmetto Dunes and Westin Resort all have their own beach areas as well. Hilton Head Island beaches are all considered public access areas, though access to some are private.
Whichever beach or beaches you find most appealing, loads of exciting fun awaits you at Hilton Head Island. From the serene and quiet natural beaches to the busy fun filled locations, there’s something for everyone. Why not made an adventure out of it and take a tour of all the Hilton Head beach areas of this glorious island.
